RESEARCH
As part of our efforts to develop the biobased supply chain from farm-to-factory, BioDimensions established the Sweet Sorghum Development Program in 2009. This Program has included extensive field trials and pilot processing, which was conducted at the Cedar Chapel cotton gin site near Whiteville, Tennessee.
Objectives of Sweet Sorghum Development Program:
- Evaluate effectiveness of existing planting and harvesting equipment for use with new crops
- Evaluate effectiveness of juice extraction equipment
- Develop commercial material balance and yield data
- Demonstrate juice stabilization by rural fermentation and “beer” storage
- Evaluate value-added bagasse options in feed and fuel markets
- Demonstrate bagasse ensilage for off-season processing
- Build financial plans for pilot scale rural biorefinery
Beginning in 2011 the Sweet Sorghum Development Program will take steps to scale up production, optimize its systems and develop a business plan for commercialization and replication throughout the MId-South region.
