The Farm to Table Conference provides a forum for farmers, consumers, and food entrepreneurs to discuss ideas and opportunities for developing the local food system of Memphis.
RESEARCH
BioDimensions is currently working on several key projects with farmers, seed companies, processors and manufacturers, as well as university researchers, non-profits and economic development agencies.
Sweet Sorghum
BioDimensions is leading the development of the first rural-based sweet sorghum biorefinery in the Mid-South. The facility will utilize existing cotton industry assets and be capable of supplying sustainable sugars as raw materials for the advanced biofuels industry. Co-products from the plant will include densified pellets for biopower, animal feed products, first-generation biofuels, and chemical feed stocks. Learn more about the project here.
Specialty Oilseeds
BioDimensions Renewable Oils is developing new value chains for proprietary oilseed crops that can be processed into high-value plant oils for downstream markets in renewable chemicals and advanced biofuels. BioDimensions Renewable Oils is collaborating with regional farmers to scale up to 100,000 acres of production of industrial oilseed crops, which will be grown during the winter season. At current oilseed prices it is estimated that this scale of production will bring 50 million dollars of new revenue into the Mid-South region. Beginning in 2012, the oil will be sold to chemical companies for making biobased products (e.g. lubricants, plastics), and in the future to advanced biofuel producers for biodiesel and jet fuel. The Company continues to conduct crop trials across the Mid-South and is working closely with farmers to optimize crop production and scale up acreage. BioDimensions Renewable Oils has also established a number of key partnerships with companies involved in plant biotechnology, seed development, agribusiness and chemical manufacturing, as well as with farmers, farm equipment providers, research farms, universities, and public officials.
Farmers in Transition
BioDimensions recognizes that new opportunities on the farm also bring new issues for farmers to address – e.g. research and policy support, access to agronomic and market information, and upgraded or adjusted equipment for harvesting and storage, just to name a few. To help farmers overcome these and other challenges, BioDimensions (in partnership with the Memphis Bioworks Foundation) has formed the 25Farmer Network. This network includes 22 leading farmers in West Tennessee with over 50,000 acres under production. Beginning in 2011 the 25Farmer Network will be expanding into Southeastern states.
